Reading isn't just for English class!
Yes, teachers, I know what you’re thinking: “Well, that’s easy for you to say… your content area is English!” While this is true, I still believe that making deep connections and digging deep is helpful and essential in every subject area, and reading can help us get there. We read every day, sometimes for pleasure, sometimes for information, and sometimes for understanding. It’s safe to say that reading is not going to go away, no matter how much students say that they hate doing it. So how do we as teachers ensure that our students are actually getting something out of what they are reading for our class? How do we make sure that they are able to use text as a tool for content understanding and mastery? The good news is: I’ve compiled a list of reading and writing activities that help students become more effective readers, so that they can get most out of any text.
Feel free to explore and enjoy the ideas that I have presented. I hope you learn something new and discover a great activity to try in your own classroom.
